Fighting Cancer with Beauty

The central design of the Scarf of Hope™ is actually an artistic transformation by designer Eric Olson of this very photograph.  Rebecca's story is one of a powerful and determined woman fighting against odds of all kinds including the death of her beloved husband Gene in 2006, followed by a devastating cancer diagnosis and later treatment.  Today she's in remission and enjoying a fabulous art career on her own terms. Eric's design tries to convey some of this determination and hope to benefit of everyone who wears the scarf.  Read More

The mission of CFFNM is to help save lives by providing the needed support to enable every northern New Mexican with cancer to access treatment in Santa Fe. It is an independent entity whose funding goes directly to cancer patients and to the support services that they provide.

Among other support activities, CFFNM provides food cards so cancer patients can get vital nutrients needed for recovery, with less stress over how to feed their families. They provide gas cards so patients in far-away parts of New Mexico can get to treatment centers. And once they get here, CFFNM provides lodging for those who can’t afford it. Last year no qualifying patient needing support was turned away.

Grit, Courage, and the Soul of an Artist

Cancer Survivor and Artist Rebecca Tobey The inspiration for the 2018 Scarf of Hope™

Cancer Survivor and Artist Rebecca Tobey
The inspiration for the 2018 Scarf of Hope™

Rebecca Tobey has had much success as an artist, a feat few artists can rival. But lest anyone think it was easy, she had to overcome many significant barriers along the way.  As a schoolgirl she was told she didn’t have enough talent to be an artist.

Yet she persisted and was running an art gallery when she met artist Gene Tobey. It was love at first sight and they formed an intense partnership and marriage that led to a business together. The business failed, and they had to begin again.  Then far too early, Gene was diagnosed with leukemia and passed away in early 2006, leaving Rebecca, as she put it, without a husband, a partner, and an entire way of life. As she was picking herself up, she discovered that she had cancer.  The illness was serious, and it was only after a difficult and long struggle that she has become stabilized in remission.

Beginning once again, she resurrected the work that she and Gene had begun. Eventually, she found new hope and direction as an artist in her own right. Today, Rebecca revels in her children and loves the daily regimen of creative work in her busy art studio in Santa Fe, NM.

We honor Rebecca's spirit, her message of tenacity and hope, and her dedication to elevation of the soul through artistic expression and symbolism in the 2018 Scarf of Hope.
